Schadenfreude for $2.50
By Andrew | January 6, 2008
One of my favorite things about living in an area that doesn’t see much rain and almost certainly never rain combined with wind is watching people with dollar store umbrellas. They inevitably invert themselves (the umbrellas, not the people(although the people would be hilarious)) at the first sign of a breeze and the owners stand there in the wind trying to straighten them out as they just keep getting wetter, not having the good sense to get under an awning or just trash the things and get to their destination.
I of course can laugh at them because in San Francisco a few years ago I bought an umbrella from a street vendor during a rainstorm. The events proceeded thusly:
- Buy umbrella, hand the guy his 5 bucks
- Walk two steps, open umbrella
- Walk two steps, windgust comes along and inverts the umbrella
- Walk two more steps, stuff umbrella into a convenient trashcan without pause
